Il traverse l'élégance somptueuse de ses portraits de femmes aussi bien que les scènes des quartiers pauvres avec la même âme, le même amour.

Dès que je l'ai connu par Gustave Zumsteg j'ai été extrêmement ébloui par son oeuvre.
Un visage de jeune femme m'a tant impressionné, un visage d'une surprenante intensité, que je n'ai pas hésité à en faire l'image du dernier parfum que je lançais à l'epoque.
J'admire profondement Gian Paolo Barbieri, je le crois sensible, humain, capable de tendresse et de Noblesse.
Le peintre de l'univers de tous les jours et de celui mysterieux du Rêve.

There's not much to add about Gian Paolo Barbieri's exquisite aesthetical sense, he's been widely celebrated, he's one of the most elegant fashion photographers ever.
But Gian Paolo is not only a great image-creator, he is also an image-inventor.
As a young man he got involved very early in theatrical performances. He would be actor, director, costume and light designer, camera operator whenever possible. He was fascinated by the Hollywood movies of the time, by the absolute beauty of the movie stars, and puzzled by the lighting techniques that made the actresses look even more beautiful. Back at home he studied the ways to reproduce the lights he had seen, putting lightbulbs in stove pipes, softening the lights with whatever he could find.
His images are often a result of his skilled craftsmanship in many fields: deserts made up of semolina, painted shadows that produce a displacing effect, rain over a studio set, earrings made with ping-pong balls... he loves to invent as much as he loves working with his own hands.
When he started fashion photography in Italy was at its first steps, fashion editors hadn't been invented yet, photographers where free to express themselves, invention was welcomed and Gian Paolo had found the perfect world to operate in.
And as many photographers of his generation he was often inspired by the great masters of paintings, Caravaggio and Hans Holbein, Chagall, Matisse, Modigliani.

The photographs that Barbieri has chosen for LateAndModern include a selection of his images from artistic references, close-ups of hairdos and headdresses from the 60's and 70's (displaying many of Gian Paolo's manual creations), a selection of his researches on lighting and composition and a spectacular "sacred" story in Valentino that has never been published.

The Gospel according to Gian Paolo

Originally shot for Italian Vogue in Rome this work was considered irriverent and was censored.
Shortly after Barbieri had interpreted a middle-east inspired Valentino collection with this shooting of an ambiguously modern Madonna and Jesus story for Italian Vogue, the Italian magazine Tempo published an interview with French author Roger Peyrefitte in which the French writer alleged that Pope Paul VI was a closet homosexual. This resulted in all the copies of the magazine being taken away from the news-stands. Fearing the catholic audience disapproval Vogue censored the work and published only a couple of pages of it.
The work features the adorable Susan Moncour in a fine spiritual lighting, accurate locations plus a backstage shot of Jesus during a make-up session.
